How to Choose a Gourmet Food Wholesaler
Opening a gift shop, deli or café means finding suppliers fast, and the choice of gourmet food wholesaler shapes your range, your cash flow and how much time you spend on admin. Here is what to look for when comparing gourmet food distributors in Australia, and the questions worth asking before you sign up.

1. Range: can one supplier fill most of your shelf?
Every extra supplier means another account, another invoice and another freight bill. Look for a wholesaler that covers several categories at once, such as biscuits, confectionery, condiments, pantry staples and gifting, so you can fill a shelf, a counter and a hamper from one order. Check whether the range includes both local and imported brands, and whether any are hard to source elsewhere.
2. Minimum orders and carton sizes
Large minimum orders tie up cash and shelf space. Ask what the minimum order is, and how many units come in a carton. Smaller cartons let you trial a product without committing to a pallet.
3. Freight costs and delivery times
Freight can quietly erase your margin. Find out the free-freight threshold, what you pay below it, and whether remote or long-distance deliveries cost more. Ask for typical transit times to your state, and allow extra for regional areas.
4. Seasonal ordering and payment terms
Christmas and Easter can make or break the year for gift retailers. A good wholesaler runs a pre-order programme so you can lock in seasonal stock early. Ask when the pre-sale opens and closes, when stock arrives, and, importantly, when you are invoiced.
5. How easy is it to order?
An online trade portal that shows pricing, carton sizes and availability saves hours compared with emailing order forms. Check whether you can order outside business hours and whether there is a real person to call when something goes wrong.
6. Manufacturer or distributor?
Some wholesalers only distribute other brands. Others also make their own products, which can mean better availability, exclusive lines and a more consistent supply. It is worth asking which brands a wholesaler owns.
